[ARCHIVED] E-mail Scam Alert

Patch Transparent

The Palm Beach Police Department has recently seen an increase in

E-mail scams. Scammers use E-mail or text messages to convince individuals into giving them their personal information, or asking them to purchase gift cards. They may also try to steal your passwords, account numbers, or Social Security number. Do not provide this information. Scammers will have access to your email, bank, or other accounts.

How to Recognize E-mail Scams:

•    Scam E-mails and text messages may appear as if they are from a company you know or trust. They may also appear to be from a bank, a credit card company, a social networking site, an online payment website, an app, or an online store.

•    Scam E-mails and text messages often tell a story in an attempt to try to convince an individual into clicking on a link or opening an attachment.

•    They may claim there is a problem with your account or your payment information.

•    Scam E-mails may also request that you confirm some personal information.

To prevent falling victim to these scams, never give out personal information through email, no matter how legitimate it may seem. When in doubt, call the police to discuss any concerns.

Residents who believe they have been a victim to this type of scam should call the Palm Beach Police Department for assistance at (561) 838-5454.
