Coronavirus Informational Notice 3/11/20
The Town of Palm Beach continues to actively monitor and adjust our practices in light of the novel (new) coronavirus disease called “coronavirus disease 2019” (abbreviated “COVID-19”). This coronavirus has now been detected in more than 100 locations internationally, including in the United States and was just declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization.
The current situation in Florida is that 21 Florida residents have tested positive for COVID-19, with two deaths. There have not been any confirmed positive cases in Palm Beach County at this time.
Because COVID-19 appears to be transmitted from person to person more readily than the influenza virus, it is essential that each person do their part to protect themselves and to protect others. We urge people to practice very simple and basis hygiene technics including:
• washing your hands frequently,
• disinfecting flat surfaces and commonly touched areas (phones, light switches, door knobs, etc.),
• covering your cough with a tissue or into your elbow,
• maintaining a social distance of 6 feet from others when possible, and
• stay home if you are sick, except to get medical care.
If you develop symptoms that including fever, chills, and/or cough, you should call your doctor immediately. If you develop shortness of breath, you should call 911.
The COVID-19 virus is particularly dangerous for older adults, people who have serious chronic medical conditions like heart disease, diabetes, lung disease, and people with obesity. These higher risk individuals should take extra measures to put distance between themselves and other people to reduce their risk of being exposed to this new virus.
The Town’s public safety departments have all been trained and equipped to deal with this crisis and are well prepared.
In an abundance of caution, the Town is promoting social distancing efforts to include the postponing of certain upcoming public meetings. Town staff will continue to evaluate the need for additional meeting cancelations. The following meetings have been canceled and will be rescheduled at later date to be determined:
March 16 – Annual Town-wide Hurricane Seminar
March 19 – Public Workshop for Boards and Commissions
March 23 – Community Input meeting for Lake Drive Park
March 31 – Citizens’ Association Hurricane Seminar
An information webpage for the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been created as a resource to the community. Town Staff will be providing updates via Town Alerts under Stay Informed on our website. Click on the link below to visit the webpage.
