Major Thomas Melnichok


Major Thomas Melnichok joined the Palm Beach Police Department on January 26, 1998. He served in the Patrol Unit, Motorcycle Unit, Special Operations Unit, and the Detective Bureau before his promotion to the rank of Sergeant in 2006.  As a Sergeant, he served in Patrol, as the Training/FTO Sergeant, and the Sergeant of the Detective Bureau. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in September of 2016 where he served as a Watch Commander and then in the Professional Standards Unit before being promoted to Captain. Major Melnichok was promoted to the rank of Major on April 13, 2019.

Major Melnichok has received 63 Department/Citizen commendations. He was designated the Department’s Officer of the Month 3 times and Kiwanis Officer of the Quarter 2 times. Major Melnichok was awarded the 2016 Palm Beach Police Foundation Officer of the Year award.

Major Melnichok is currently attending Capella University for his PhD in Homeland Security. He holds a Master of Science in Leadership from Palm Beach Atlantic University and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Administration from Barry University. He is a graduate of the 62nd Administrator Officers Course at the Southern Police Institute of the University of Louisville.  Major Melnichok served honorably in the United States Coast Guard.

Major Melnichok is a Police Department and Police Academy instructor in Firearms, Less than Lethal Tactics, Defensive Tactics, First Aid, and Police Driving. He is an adjunct Professor for Palm Beach State College where he teaches various criminal justice courses.
