2017 Atlantic Basin Hurricane Season Begins Today

Today marks the official start of the 2017 Atlantic Basin Hurricane Season. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center has projected that this year’s hurricane season will be “above normal.” For the six-month season, which runs from June 1 until November 30, NOAA has predicted within a 70% likelihood the development of:

• 11 - 17 named storms (with top winds of 39 mph or higher),
• of which, 5 - 9 will strengthen to a hurricane (with top winds of 74 mph or higher),
• of those, 2 - 4 will become major hurricanes (with top winds of 111 mph or higher, ranking Category 3, 4 or 5)

An average season produces 12 named storms of which six become hurricanes, including three major hurricanes.

Regardless of the forecast, it still only takes one direct impact from a hurricane to cause massive disruption and destruction to our area. Therefore, the Town strongly encourages residents and business owners to take the necessary preparedness steps to ensure you are ready when a hurricane eventually makes landfall near Palm Beach. Having a plan in place before a disaster happens is vital. Visit the Town's Hurricane Preparedness web page by clicking the link below for more information and planning resources.
